Ally Bank Introduces Savings Talk: A New Monthly Column

Today we’re kicking off Savings Talk, our monthly column about the art of saving. While the Straight Talk Blog is always dedicated to giving you ideas on how to make the most of your money, we’ll present a special post each month dedicated to saving.

To get things started, we thought we’d examine some of our favorite savings-related quotes.

“I’d like to live as a poor man with lots of money.”
– Pablo Picasso

When he wrote this line in a letter, the painter meant he wanted to enjoy the freedom of not being tied to a job he dislikes, or of having to compromise his principles, without suffering the unhappiness of not having enough to get by. But it could also describe the goal-minded saver, who knows that a wealth of benefits – such as earned interest, or a nice retirement fund – await you, as long as you’re patient.

“If you know how to spend less than you get, you have the philosopher’s stone.”
– Benjamin Franklin

One of America’s most colorful Founding Fathers dispersed a lot of wisdom when it came to money. “A penny saved is a penny earned” may be his most famous piece of financial insight, but the sentiment above is the guiding philosophy of any serious saver.

“Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time.”
– Jim Rohn

A popular speaker on business and finances, Rohn argued that while money may be important, it isn’t everything. In fact, a basic tenet of the personal-finance community is that, for all the benefits the come with money, there are indeed things it can’t buy.

Over the next couple of months we’ll discuss topics such as talking to your kids about money, and how to figure out how much savings is enough. We’ll also chat with some of our favorite financial bloggers to create a list of rules that every saver should adhere to.

If you have a topic that you’d like us to talk about in our Savings Talk series, let us know. You can tell us in the comments, send us a tweet or get in touch with us on Facebook.
